In today’s global world, many young children grow up surrounded by multiple languages, cultures, and identities. Some move between countries. Others grow up in multicultural families or attend international schools in their home city.
These children are often described as Cross-Cultural Children and their early experiences play a powerful role in shaping how they see themselves and the world.
At Vietnam Mandarin Kindergarten (VMK), our students come from diverse backgrounds, including Vietnamese, Hong Kong, Chinese, and Malaysian–Australian families. Supporting a sense of belonging within this diversity is a core part of our learning environment.

What Are Cross-Cultural Children?
Cross-Cultural Children are those who grow up meaningfully connected to more than one culture during their early years. This may happen through family background, language, schooling, or community.
A child may be:
Vietnamese, attending an international-style kindergarten
From a bicultural or multilingual family
Growing up in Vietnam after relocating from another country
These children often develop a rich sense of identity shaped by multiple cultural influences.
Cross-Cultural Children and Early Childhood
In the early years, children are actively forming their sense of self and belonging. Cross-cultural experiences can foster:
Openness and curiosity
Strong communication skills
Comfort navigating differences
At the same time, young children may also need support as they learn to:
Understand different languages and social norms
Feel secure in new environments
Build stable relationships and routines
A consistent, caring school environment plays an essential role in helping children feel safe, seen, and connected.

Language, Culture, and Belonging at VMK
At VMK, language is not treated as a subject—it is part of daily life. Through Mandarin–English immersion, children experience language as a natural bridge between cultures.
Our approach supports belonging by:
Using a one language – one teacher model for clarity and trust
Integrating language into play, routines, and project-based learning
Encouraging children to express themselves across languages
Valuing each child’s home culture and background
Children learn that it is natural to move between languages and perspectives and that their unique experiences are respected.
Building a Sense of Community in a Multicultural Setting
Belonging in early childhood is built through:
Predictable routines
Warm, responsive relationships
Opportunities to collaborate and play together
In a culturally diverse classroom, children learn empathy, respect, and cooperation by interacting with peers from different backgrounds in a shared environment.
